The Role of Swing

The role of swing is of an understudy, one who learns the blocking, music, and/or choreography of another actor’s role(s), with one major caveat. There is no expectation of performance except in the case of a significant circumstance. Prior to auditions, the production director determines the need for swings who are then cast as part of the audition process with full accreditation as company members.

Swings provide essential backup for specific roles, alleviating the concern for rehearsal and performance process interruptions. The position offers opportunities for students with differing abilities to gain skills through observation, practice, and collaboration on the performance team.
