From the Program Director
We are excited to welcome you to the final production of our 2025-2026 Producing Series, Oscar Wilde’s comedic masterpiece, The Importance of Being Earnest.
Over a century since its premiere, Wilde’s “trivial comedy for serious people” remains one of the funniest plays in the English language. Its razor-sharp wit and satirical look at social conventions and mistaken identities offer the perfect escape. There is no better way to conclude our academic year than on such a high, hilarious note—celebrating the joy of laughter and the lighthearted spirit of the spring season.
This production demonstrates the heart and mission of University Theatre. As NC State’s open-access theatre company, we serve the entire student body, ensuring every student has the opportunity to engage with the performing arts. Our mission—to create an inclusive, student-centered community that inspires meaningful connections grounded in the experience of making and sharing theatre—is evident in the fun and enjoyment our students find in this process. Whether they are performing on stage or working behind the scenes, the bonds forged here create a lasting impact for our students and the greater community alike.
The scope of student dedication in this production is truly impressive. This performance was brought to life by over 75 students who contributed their talents as cast members, backstage crew, and artisans in our shops all under the direction of the talented staff of University Theatre. Their hard work ensures that the elegance and absurdity of Wilde’s world are perfectly realized here in Thompson Hall.
While this show concludes our 2025-2026 series, the excitement at University Theatre never stops. We are thrilled to announce that sales have officially opened today for our 2026 TheatreFEST series! Join us this summer for more thrills and laughter with The Mystery of Irma Vep and Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero. Tickets are on sale now.
Thank you for your unwavering support of live theatre at NC State. We hope you enjoy the wit and whimsy of tonight’s performance!
