Mapping Instincts: Neuroscience at PLAY with the Mind and Body

Apr. 16-19
Kennedy-McIlwee Studio Theatre

An original production devised by the company
Directed by Mia L. Self

In 1998, the neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp published a book classifying seven primary affective systems or, more simply, emotional developmental states. He hypothesizes SEEKING (expectancy), FEAR (anxiety), RAGE (anger), LUST (sexual excitement), CARE (nurturance), PANIC/GRIEF (sadness), and PLAY (social joy) are encoded into our nature from birth and drive our connections to each other and the world around us. Mapping Instincts is our collective exploration of these concepts at PLAY in our bodies and minds.

A Studio Series production.
