Studio Series

Brave spaces. Guided risk. Student Voices.

The Studio Series at University Theatre serves as an incubator for storytelling, interdisciplinary artistic inquiry, and creative experimentation. Operating in a high-support, authentic learning environment, the series centers narrative, performance, and the collaborative process—providing students with an accessible platform for risk-taking and a springboard for advanced creative projects.

The Four Programs of the Studio Series

The series spans four distinct programs designed to meet student artists at every stage of their development:

Creative Artist Award

An original play development pipeline. Students submit one-act scripts in the fall for consideration. Selected playwrights receive structured writing support in the spring before their original work is produced in the Studio Series the following fall.

Student Studio

A student-led, staff-mentored production framework where student directors, designers, and project leads select, pitch, and execute a 60-90 minute one-act show, building leadership and collaborative skill sets.

A sparse stage with platforms that characters are strewn about, two in an intense conversation while one holds a ukulele.

Guest Artist Partnership

A process-focused performance experience that connects students with professional guest artists. This track introduces external perspectives, diverse stories, and industry networks beyond resident artistic leadership, focusing deeply on acting craft, performance, and storytelling.

Guest artists direct a series of participants.

QuickSCRIPTS

A fast-paced, low-barrier event where 10-minute plays are written, directed, rehearsed, and performed in record time. QuickSCRIPTS acts as an accessible entry point for students wanting to test the waters of playwriting, directing, or acting without a semester-long commitment.
